Happy Easter everyone! Easter is one of my favorite holidays — the idea of celebrating the beginning of spring is just so wonderful. We have been spending days cooking, eating and staying together.

This year, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, nobody can move out of the house so we all #stayhome. For us it means, we will celebrate for the first time in many years, this Easter in our own company only 4 of us.

We’ll have plenty of time to connect, craft, and cook. And eat all of the eggs, of course! In my family tradition, there are, though, some interesting Polish customs that stand out. Even we’re not leaving in Poland right now, we still celebrate them and I thought it would be nice to share some of our Easter traditions with you. In this particular article, you can read more about polish traditions for Easter.

A week or two before Easter, we set a few branches of curly catkins in a vase and decorate them with colorful eggs. Catkins symbolize the spring and we love to see this simple but lovely fresh ornament bringing Easter in the house!

We also put Easter ornaments we have made and collected over the years out. These are Easter Bunnies, plenty of painted Easter Eggs, yellow Chicks here and there.

I love to set the best tablecloths, spring colored napkins and cloths out to fill my house with seasonal flowers, colors, and fragrances!

Easter Day is traditionally celebrated with a brunch, and I always love making a few things that for us are so typical for the Easter holiday:

  • Painted Easter eggs, of course! We made the beautiful Easter eggs a few weeks ago, and this weekend we experimented with natural egg dies (using brown onion skins, red onion skins, red cabbage, and turmeric, on white and brown eggs). We were very happy with the pretty results!
  • We serve the Zur – it is a soup with a slightly sour flavor, which comes from its secret ingredient: fermented rye flour. Served with sausage and eggs, it’s a traditional Easter dish in Poland.
  • Easter reminds me about all the sweets abundances – this year we bake a pound cake with raspberries. Yummy!
  • Of course, after brunch, the children search for the chocolate eggs that the Easter Bunny has hidden in the garden: )

I am curious to know, what are Easter traditions in your family and what you are preparing for this Spring celebrations? Make sure to share them with us and tag your pictures with @AMotherJoy.

All my best,
